Precision in Print: The Behind-the-Scenes of Scouting America’s Uniform Signage

Written by Ainsley Robinson | Feb 7, 2025 1:31:47 PM

The Situation

Scouting America approached Symphonix with a unique challenge: they needed a fresh approach to displaying their “Uniform Essentials” signs in their retail stores. The signs played a key role in organizing their stores by breaking up the wall of uniforms according to “rank.”

Initially displayed on floor-based hardware, the idea evolved to create “display violators” – signage that would hang directly from wall displays.

However, there were several key requirements for this project:

  • Durability: The signage had to withstand regular touching and movement.
  • Lightweight Design: The materials needed to be light enough for magnetic hardware to securely hold them in place without sliding.
  • Aesthetic Appeal: The signage had to maintain premium print quality and align with the retail store’s visual branding.
  • Evergreen Material: The signage material needed to be long-lasting to stay in place year-round.

Scouting America turned to Symphonix for an innovative, functional solution that could meet these demands.

The Symphonix Solution

Symphonix began by addressing the key challenge of selecting the right material for the signage. The process included a series of steps to ensure the perfect solution for Scouting America’s needs:

  1. Material Testing
  • We recommended several substrates and sampled hardware pieces from the client’s inventory. These allowed the Scouting America team to test if the magnetic hardware could adequately hold the substrates in place.
  • To refine the solution, we created blank samples cut to size (14” x 38”) for initial testing.
  1. Pre-Production Samples
  • Based on the results of the material tests, we produced pre-production samples with the “Uniform Essentials” artwork printed directly onto the leading substrate option – 3 mil PVC. This material was selected due to its durability, lightweight nature, and compatibility with the magnetic hardware.
  1. Optimized Printing
  • During the first round of samples printed on 30 mil Styrene, we noticed ink inconsistencies due to absorption by the substrate. This finding allowed us to refine the production process and eliminate potential issues in the final output.

Results

The final signage solution exceeded Scouting America’s expectations. Here’s how:

  • The 3 mil PVC substrate proved to be the ideal choice for durability, aesthetics, and compatibility with their magnetic hardware.
  • The sample signage was presented during a demo at the Carolina Scout Shop to Scouting America’s Regional Sales Managers and their CEO, where it was well-received.
  • After completing three rounds of samples, a final product was approved that delivered flawless print quality on an evergreen material.
  • Scouting America has since reordered these point of purchase pieces with the intention of keeping them up year-round, showcasing their long-term satisfaction with the solution.
